Philanthropy Australia’s third annual Better Philanthropy Telescope takes the pulse of the sector, shedding light on the emerging trends, challenges and opportunities that will shape Australia’s giving agenda in the year ahead.

In this year’s edition, the sector reflects deeply on its role and impact.  “We find a sector that more than ever is considering how external developments, including the recent US Presidential election, global conflicts, and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, will shape the context in which philanthropy operates,” said Adam Ognall, Executive Director of Partnerships and Practice at Philanthropy Australia.

The report, created through input from 120 survey respondents, identifies key themes central to philanthropic efforts moving forward. These themes point to a strong desire for deeper collaboration, shared power and a better understanding of the true impact of giving.

The top 10 ideas that will matter in 2025:

  1. Collaboration across the sector and beyond
  2. Peer learning and sharing
  3. Impact of changing political context
  4. DGR reform
  5. Understanding and communicating impact
  6. Impactful giving
  7. Improving practice
  8. Trust-based philanthropy and shared power
  9. Growing giving
  10. Leadership.

The big world issues:

  • Cost-of-living
  • Climate
  • Australian Federal Election
  • Policy advocacy
  • First Nations
  • Global events.

Despite the shifting landscape, many of the same issues raised in previous years remain top priorities. “This speaks to an approach that values consistency through long-term thinking and relationships,” said Adam. “However, consistency should not be understood as a static approach – there is much evolution and momentum. How philanthropy responds to the climate crisis and how First Nations communities are best supported remains front of mind for many.”

The path forward: What’s next?

Philanthropy Australia remains committed to supporting sector-wide reflection and evolution. While the report offers valuable insights, it cannot fully capture the breadth of Australian philanthropy or encompass the diverse range of thinking. We look forward to exploring these themes further in our work this year.

The Telescope report also serves as a call to action, encouraging the sector to embrace these ideas and work collaboratively toward more and better giving for a generous and inclusive Australia.

Philanthropy Australia thanks all who took part in the survey.
