Co-director Sal Balharrie thought it would take 18 months to get her latest documentary Like My Brother ‘done and dusted’. The film, about female footballers from the remote Tiwi Islands following their AFLW dreams, ultimately took six years, with many lessons learned. It was nearly derailed by COVID, but it was actually the time needed to build relationships with First Nations communities that set the pace. The making of this inspiring film, released in cinemas October 17, was philanthropically backed by 76 donors.

Two workshops on blended finance hosted by Convergence and supported by the Foundations Group for Impact Investing (FGII) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) were held last week. Convergence is the global network for blended finance that aims to increase private investment in emerging markets and developing economies to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement. Here, DFAT’s Steph van Loon reflects on the key insights.

auDA’s R&D Grant Program is a new initiative that will fund multi-year partnerships for projects that deliver impact through research and development. Up to two grants of between $300,000 and $500,000 per annum for three years are available to Australian university or research organisations registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Commission (ACNC). Queensland charities have a fresh chance to secure new funding to help support their operations and invest in new projects to support communities throughout the state, with the opening of two Queensland Gives 2025 funding programs on 1 October. Applications for Queensland Gives' two major funding streams – the General Fund-Organisational Capacity Building grants program, and its Regional grants program - will be open until 13 December, with a particular focus on projects helping youth, women and families at risk.
