A report commissioned by the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) into its long-running Tackling Tough Times Together (TTTT) drought support program has found that funding locally based NFPs and community groups and activities that strengthen social capital during drought sustains communities and supports recovery. The TTTT program ran from 2014 to 2022 and was collaboratively funded by government and philanthropy, awarding $18.6 million via 681 grants.

Designed by Australian farmers for farmers, ifarmwell is an online toolkit to help people working the land to cope with its challenges and circumstances that are often beyond their control. ifarmwell is philanthropically supported and shares practical tips for dealing with difficult thoughts and worries – and is having a positive impact on farmers’ mental health in regional and often isolated areas. As disadvantaged young people from Adelaide are bussed 700km north of the city to the Flinders Ranges, made to hand over their mobile phones and hike into the wilderness, at least one will drop their backpack and run. One of the plenary sessions at the Philanthropy Australia conference (5-7 August) that struck a chord with many was Safeena Husain’s presentation on accelerating impact at scale through investing in women and girls in India. She shared the stage with James Chen who spoke on Moonshot Philanthropy. The sessions were so jam-packed with engaging content that there was no time for audience questions – although there were several. Here, Safeena has responded to three posed to her. It's a new platform for philanthropy that features a series of resources on how to leverage cutting-edge data-driven methods and tools across the grantmaking decision cycle, developed with the support of the Paul Ramsay Foundation. The session will look at how funders can use participatory approaches to formulate questions and discuss how data-driven questioning can drive impact for funder evaluations.

The Community Inclusion grant program distributes funds for projects that encourage social inclusion and social participation for people with disabilities.
Grants will provide opportunities for social inclusion and participation for people with disability in Victoria. These objectives are informed by guiding principle no. 3 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD): Full and effective participation and inclusion in society. (CRPD 2007). The City of Melbourne's Social Enterprise Grants are a stream of the Small Business Grants program and supports new and existing enterprises with a distinctly social purpose, with up to $25,000 per application.

The NAB Foundation Community Grants program provides funding of up to $25,000 for local projects that help communities withstand and recover from natural disasters.It awards $1.2 million in Community Grants each year across two grant rounds, including $200,000 available in Impact Grants for projects with big potential. These Impact Grants provide a further $25,000 to recipients to maximise the impact they have on their communities. Submissions close midnight 30 September 2024 (AEST). |

The Innovation Grants round supports new ideas that address the social and environmental priorities of the Foundation. The Wicking Trust has opened a national grant round focussed on ‘Bringing death back into life’ - investing in excess of $6 million over the next three years. The ‘bringing death back into life’ grant round aims to: - Create more open conversations about death and dying - increasing death literacy
- Support older Australians to prepare for and plan for dying and death
- Facilitate more connected and coordinated formal and informal care networks
- Enable better access to information and expertise that connects older people to the support they need, when they need it.
