Welcome back to Philanthropy Weekly - 2024 promises to be an exciting year. In April, we will host the Australian Philanthropy Awards, recognising extraordinary achievements in contemporary philanthropy. The final Productivity Commission recommendations will be released in May and our August conference in Adelaide – For the Love of Humanity: Impact with Humility – will be one to remember. We also have great content lined up in our newsletter and new segments to look out for, such as practical guides and spotlights on the activities of new and established members.

Independent wealth management firm Koda Capital has launched its own company foundation that empowers employees to become philanthropists in their own right. The Koda Endowment creates an appealing option for staff to structure their giving, building up their philanthropic capital via their salary in a similar manner to how they build up their superannuation - creating a lasting legacy for themselves and the community. Chris Wilson, Philanthropy and Social Capital Partner at Koda, explains how it works.

He reflects on a tremendous week of PA member engagement and information sessions attended by well over 100 people, where there was lively and constructive feedback on PA’s submission to the PC.

Impact investing is playing a growing role in the development of medicines to treat ‘neglected diseases’ affecting the world’s poorest and most underserved peoples. These medicines would not otherwise be developed by the pharmaceutical industry, which is primarily driven by financial returns. Mark Sullivan AO, founder and managing director of Medicines Development for Global Health, an Australian biopharmaceutical NFP, tells how this finance model is supporting the development of Moxidectin – a potential gamechanger for the WHO’s roadmap to ending river blindness by 2030.

The Australian Philanthropy Awards 2024 are set to recognise extraordinary achievements in contemporary philanthropy. People and organisations from across Australia can nominate and be nominated – they don’t have to be a member of Philanthropy Australia. 'We've received some fantastic entries so far for the awards. It's exciting to see the incredible work being recognised in the sector despite these challenging times. Don't miss out on this fantastic opportunity to shine a light on good practice in creating positive change in our society,' says Renata Zanetti, Philanthropy Australia's Director of Learning and Content. Entries close on 25 February.
