When we think about managing the impact of natural disasters, we tend to focus on response and recovery. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this attitude is reflected in the funding of natural disaster management, with 97% of funding directed to efforts to clean up and rebuild. In the face of natural disasters becoming more frequent, the CEO of the Northern Rivers Community Foundation, Sam Henderson argues that we need to shift funding towards building community resilience and social capital, to better equip communities to respond to floods, fires and other catastrophes.

FYA is offering grants totalling up to $100,000, open to groups led by young people (under 30) across the country working to create positive systemic change.
These grants aim to support under-resourced youth-led groups and grassroots campaigns with lived experience of injustice, by providing the resources they need to make a positive difference and helping them take care of themselves and their communities. |
|
$137,000 in grants are on offer to eligible charities, including the new $50,000 Heritage and People’s Choice Grant.
A total of six grants are available and are to be used to support the overall costs of a specific program that has a proven track record of creating impact in one of three focus areas. |
