Guest Editor, Adrian Appo OAM |
Welcome to Philanthropy Weekly’s NAIDOC Week special edition. We are handing over the editorial reins to a guest editor – the highly accomplished First Nations philanthropic leader, Adrian Appo OAM.
As we celebrate the rich heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge, culture and inspiring achievements during NAIDOC Week 2023, we profile Adrian who gives us his thoughts on a range of topics. He has also chosen and overseen the two lead stories featured on First Australians Capital and the important work being done by the land, sea and waters Indigenous management not-for-profits, NAILSMA and Firesticks.
Adrian is a Gooreng Gooreng man from the Bundaberg area in Queensland. Here, he talks about eldership; breaking down barriers facing First Nations’ enterprise; why 95% of indigenous businesses have a social agenda; the Voice to Parliament; capacity building and how the foundation he works for is planning to make a difference in the Indigenous jobs space in a six-year spend-down. |
‘Governments and banks are risk-averse, so there is a sweet spot for philanthropy to take prime position investing more and better in First Nations enterprise.'
Indigenous management methods for land, sea and waters are finally being recognised by mainstream agencies. Not-for-profits are leading the way in merging technology such as AI with 65,000+ year-old knowledge resulting in cultural, social and environmental benefits.
