| The rise of advocacy in philanthropy |
This edition of Philanthropy Weekly is themed around the growing support of advocacy by the philanthropic sector. We take a look at the current social and political landscape, along with the challenges and opportunities. We kick off with Rachel Ball, the new CEO at the Reichstein Foundation, who reflects on the Pledge for Yes, as one example, of how far Australian philanthropy has come in supporting advocacy – but asks what more can we do to unleash its full power. “Unless our greatest aspiration is the maintenance the status quo, we must push for change.”

The Public Interest Advocacy Centre has developed a Global Impact Framework to help measure and communicate the tangible outcomes of advocacy. PIAC’s Impact Manager Rivkah Nissim, answers questions on how funders and NFPs can come together more to address the challenges of measuring the impact of advocacy. |
Long-time philanthropic adviser and educationalist Jason Franklin first spoke about advocacy at Philanthropy Australia’s conference in 2016. Here, he talks about challenges facing grantmakers and why they need to be brave in the face of the biggest global forces working against progressive social and environmental change for a generation. He presents our Grantmaking Fundamentals course on 15 May.

Philanthropy Australia has today provided its submission to the Productivity Commission. Huge thanks go out to members who provided advice across four member sessions, as well as to the many who met directly with Sam Rosevear – our Executive Director of Policy, Government Relations and Research – to provide thoughts, advice and ideas. |
As the peak body for philanthropy, we actively undertake policy advocacy to support more and better giving in Australia and represent our members on important sector issues. We work closely with Federal and State Governments to develop their understanding of the philanthropic sector, and to promote effective policy frameworks to grow and support giving. Philanthropy Australia’s Better Giving Hub (for members) has a range of resources on advocacy.
