In this practical 90 minute workshop, you will gain an overview of philanthropy, explore ways to give and get some answers to whywhere and how to get started.

Specifically, you will:

  • Start to understand the role of philanthropy
  • Explore, through worksheets, the motivations, themes and causes that might be relevant to you
  • Learn about the different ways you can give in a structured or unstructured manner
  • Hear hints and tips from an existing philanthropist about how they got started
  • Find out about advisers and organisations who can help you
  • Take home a copy of the PA Guide to Giving to work through at your own pace

Speakers

Patricia Burke OAM, Senior Advisor, Engagement & Philanthropy, Philanthropy Australia & Philanthropist 

Previously the state manager for Philanthropy Australia’s Victoria and Tasmania members, Pat has been part of Australia’s peak body for philanthropy and giving since 2011. She holds a Master’s in Social Investment and Philanthropy from Swinburne (2013). She has held leadership positions with not-for-profit boards and has experience in policy and program development, grants, fundraising and board governance.

A giving circle advocate, Pat is Co-Founder of the Melbourne Women’s Fund – a giving circle established in 2014 to support women and families in greater metropolitan Melbourne. Pat is a director on the National Trust of Victoria Foundation, an ambassador for the Victoria University Foundation, a former board director and company secretary of Variety the Children’s Charity, Victoria and a former board director and Chair of the Foundation of the Firbank Grammar School.

Pat was awarded an OAM on Australia Day 2020 for service to the community through charitable organisations.

Julia Steele Scott, CEO at Grant Toolbox & JM Philanthropy

Julia holds a Master of Business Administration and an Associate Diploma in Accounting. She has worked in the not for profit sector in various roles for more than 20 years and most recently her experience in philanthropy was gained through representing South Australia and Western Australia as the State Manager for the peak body for philanthropy, Philanthropy Australia. With a background in general management and a strong client focus, based on good relationships, she is passionate about encouraging the growth of philanthropy at all levels.

Julia leads JM Philanthropy and acts as CEO of a number of foundations. She also manages the Klein Family Foundation, sits on the Board of Impact100 SA, Pembroke School, Pembroke School Foundation and is a member of the Institute of Company Directors. Julia enjoys spending time with her family and two busy children, loves being outdoors; skiing, camping, walking or bike riding through the beautiful Adelaide Hills.

Sharon McGann, National Engagement Manager (SA), Philanthropy Australia

Sharon has a Masters of Education in Adult Education and a Bachelor of Business. Sharon’s background is in financial planning and training and she has worked with a number of not-for-profit organisations and foundations on varied projects and roles – such as a peer mentoring program and Partners for Impact Manager, with United Way Australia and AMP Foundation. She also ran a project to improve financial literacy and was involved in a collaboration to increase school-to-work opportunities for young people in Western Sydney with ING Foundation and United Way Australia.

Sharon is currently active in a range of local South Australian initiatives – including Chair of Onkaparinga Food Security Collaborative Steering Committee and a committee member of Healthy Cities Onkaparinga.
